Celebrating a special day

Saturday 18 April 2015 was a very special day for Ronald Lal Din Suah and Langham Partnership Australia. It was the day Ronald formally graduated from Ridley College in Melbourne with his ThD (Doctor of Theology).

This was the culmination of more than 3 years of hard work for Ronald.

To come with your family to a foreign country to study for a doctorate whilst helping to pastor a church of refugees is remarkable. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that it was done in English, which is actually Ronald’s 4th language!

Those celebrating with Ronald included from left, above: Dwi Handayani (Langham Scholar from Indonesia), Gillean Smiley (Langham Australia CEO), Dr Paul Barker (Langham Scholar Care Coordinator), Qaiser Julius (Langham Scholar from Pakistan) and Wendy Toulmin (previous Executive Officer of Langham Australia).

Ronald himself has said, “The completion of my doctoral work comes as a fulfilment of my dream in life. Without the enormous support of Langham, this dream of mine would not have been fulfilled by any means. I believe this new achievement will open more doors for me to serve the sovereign Lord whom I serve so dearly in our part of the world. I am forever grateful to Langham and deeply admire what the strategic ministry has accomplished across the globe.”

Ronald and his family are now back in Myanmar, with Ronald teaching at the Myanmar Evangelical Graduate School of Theology in the capital, Yangon.

Please continue to pray for Ronald as he teaches the next generation of pastors and church leaders in Myanmar. Pray also for his wife Mary and children Jedidiah, Bruce and Rody as they live for the Lord in Myanmar.

Join us in prayer…

  • Country Coordinators: Please pray for our Country Coordinators who oversee the Preaching work in over 50 countries around the world. All of them are balancing their work for Langham alongside their employment. Pray for wisdom and strength as they give so generously to the work of Preaching.
  • See the calendar above for places where Preaching events are to be held this month. In Zimbabwe, a series of Saturday teaching sessions are being held, which is why Zimbabwe appears each week!.

  • Nepal: Please pray for the Theological Seminaries and Libraries, a number of whom have been affected by the recent earthquakes. Some are supporting graduates who are now Pastors in rural areas with aid relief as well as looking to repair damage to their own properties.
  • Latin American Commentary: Please pray for Ian Darke and his team. An excellent pre-publication presentation of the Commentary was given at Expolit in Miami, USA. Please pray for the continued developing relationships with distributors, booksellers and ministries.

  • Scholar Care: Please pray for our Scholar Care Coordinators Fred Gale (USA), Liz McGregor (UK), Mardochee Nadoumngar (Africa), Paul Barker (Asia) and Bill Houston (South Africa) who do very important work in bringing pastoral care and support to our Langham Scholars during their doctoral studies.
  • New Scholars: Those scholars who have been selected to receive scholarships starting in September 2015 will be informed within the next few weeks. Please pray for them as they begin to prepare for their studies, sometimes far from home.
  • Please pray for Qaiser Julius at Melbourne School of Theology as he completes his PhD thesis. Pray for him and the family as they look to return to Pakistan later this year.
  • Please pray for our potential new scholar in Australia (from Ethiopia) as he applies for his visa.

Langham Australia CEO Gillean Smiley writes…

Celebrating with Ronald at his graduation was a very moving occasion – and I found out much that I hadn’t known previously about his quiet but persistent activities in Myanmar. For example, on his return to Yangon, even before taking up his teaching load, Ronald started a local mission group, to raise funds to reach out to more isolated regions in Myanmar. Our scholars are remarkable people, making a huge impact in their own countries.

Right now the budget for the next financial year is being finalised, and we are planning our strategy for raising awareness and funds for the Preaching, Literature and Scholars programs. I’m particularly excited by our plan to provide every graduate from our partner theological colleges in the Majority World with a five book basic theological Library. For most, this gift from Langham Partnership will constitute their entire resource Library. We have ambitious goals, but trust that God will continue to bless the ministry He has called us to.
