John Libby takes a lead in Langham
Langham Partnership (UK and Ireland) is pleased to announce the appointment of Rev Canon John Libby as their National Director from 1st May, 2016.
John spent 16 years in international banking, which included a Cambridge degree in economics and significant experience in senior financial management in the UK and USA.
Christian entrepreneur
After gaining a further qualification in theology and being ordained in the Church of England, he spent 18 years as vicar of St. James, a large Anglican church in Carlisle. His responsibilities included a directorship of the Diocesan Board of Finance, Area Dean, and a number of senior civic community appointments.
He and his church were heavily involved in the emergency relief work following the disastrous floods in the region.
Around these two major ministry vocations, as a Christian entrepreneur John has built and fund-raised for a range of charitable enterprises. These include mixed ability youth ventures (the Kepplewray Trust, with connections in Africa), and a chain of community shops (OpShops), bringing the church to the High Street.
Increasing impact
As a Geordie born and bred, John enthusiastically supports Newcastle (mainly Falcons for whom he once played rugby, but also United), though now mainly from his armchair. He enjoys mountain walking. He and his wife Daphne have three adult children and still live in Carlisle.
“Langham’s reputation and increasing impact in support of the ‘majority world’ church is widely acknowledged and respected,” says John Libby. “It is my privilege to join Langham’s team as they face growing requests from indigenous church leaders for more resources to help deepen the biblical faith of their rising membership. I’m very much looking forward to building Langham’s capacity to respond.”
“John Libby brings a breadth of qualifications and experience that will greatly strengthen our Langham leadership team here and internationally,” comments Chris Wright, International Ministries Director.
‘Just the right person’
“It has been a real joy to see how God has used the Langham Partnership programmes in recent years. I believe John Libby is just the right person to develop our resource building in the UK and Ireland so that we can serve the global church ever more effectively. I am delighted to introduce him to those who have not yet encountered him or his gifts!” writes Mary Evans (Chair of LPUKI Board and Langham Partnership International Council).
