John Stott
Langham Partnership founder John Stott raised the standard of biblical teaching around the world through his influential ministry.
The Langham Story
John Stott understood Christians must first be transformed by God's Word if they are going to be faithful disciples. And for Christians to mature in their faith, they need leaders who believe, teach and live by God's Word. Yet, as he traveled the world, he recognized the lack of formal training among most pastors.
In 1969, John Stott founded the Langham Partnership –- named for Langham Place at All Souls Church in London, where Stott pastored –– personally renouncing the income from his books and devoting all royalties to support the training of pastors in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
About John Stott
John Stott was born in London in 1921 and educated at Rugby School and Trinity College Cambridge. He then trained for the pastorate at Ridley Hall, Cambridge. Following his ordination in 1945, Stott became assistant curate at All Souls and then, unusually for someone not yet thirty, he was appointed rector in 1950. He became rector emeritus in 1975, a position he held to the end of his life.
Stott was very influential in England, serving in several leadership roles on national councils, Christian organizations, the college and university fellowship and even as a chaplain to the Queen. His influence reached far beyond his home country as he led extensive university missions, helped draft important evangelical documents and strengthened the evangelical voice across established churches, particularly the Anglican Church.
He was awarded a Lambeth Doctorate in Divinity (DD) in 1983 and received honorary doctorates from universities in America, Britain, and Canada. He was listed in Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People" (April, 2005) and was named in the Queen's New Years Honours List as Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) on December 31, 2005.
His books have sold millions of copies in dozens of languages, but the true legacy of John Stott is one of multiplication: the story of how God planted a seed in one faithful man and grew it into a movement of equipping leaders with God's Word, impacting generations for Christ.
